————— DISPLACE (MEDIATIONS OF SENSATION) ...back to Research/Creation

Displace is a performative environment that was first installed in the Hexagram-Concordia Black Box during the American Anthropological Association (AAA) meetings in Montreal, November 16–20, 2011. Over a 45-minute period, groups of 6 visitors progressed through a sequence of sensory-based environments. At first, these environments intermingled gustatory and haptic stimuli and then gradually convoked all the senses inside intense, almost hallucinatory spaces where flickering color, sound and tactile vibrations and fleeting tastes and scents merged to the point of saturation.

A second iteration took place during the TodaysArt Festival in Den Haag, Netherlands, September 20–22, 2012.

Displace is one of series of experiments conducted within the context of a larger research project entitled “Mediations of Sensation”, developed by media artists Chris Salter and TeZ and anthropologist David Howes, along with a team of researchers in design and anthropology.
